The historic capital of Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates, featuring ancient ruins, vibrant city life, and rich cultural heritage.
Kos Town is the capital and largest city of Kos island, serving as the main port and the cultural, historical, and administrative center of the island. This vibrant city seamlessly blends ancient history with modern amenities, offering visitors a rich tapestry of experiences from archaeological wonders to contemporary dining and shopping.
The city is most famous for being the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, and visitors can explore the ancient Asklepion, one of the most important healing centers of the ancient world. The town is home to numerous archaeological sites, including the Ancient Agora, the Roman Odeon, and the imposing Castle of the Knights (Neratzia Castle), built by the Knights of Rhodes in the 15th century.
The old town area is particularly charming, with its narrow cobblestone streets, traditional houses with wooden balconies, and the famous Plane Tree of Hippocrates, under which the great physician is said to have taught his students. The area around Plateia Platanou (Plane Tree Square) forms the heart of the historic center, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and shops housed in beautifully preserved buildings.
Kos Town boasts excellent beaches within walking distance of the city center, including the popular Lambi Beach to the north. The marina area is perfect for evening strolls, with numerous waterfront restaurants and bars offering views of the Turkish coast, which is visible just a few kilometers away across the strait.
The city offers exceptional shopping opportunities, from the bustling central market where locals sell fresh produce, spices, and handmade goods, to modern boutiques and international brands along the main pedestrian streets. The nightlife scene is diverse, ranging from sophisticated cocktail bars to traditional tavernas with live Greek music.
Cultural enthusiasts will appreciate the Archaeological Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts from various periods of the island's history, and the annual cultural events and festivals that take place throughout the summer months.
